Best time to fly to Cancun

The short answer

I track this route constantly because it is one of the most-searched winter-sun trips out of Canada, and the pattern is consistent year to year: November is the best all-around month — hurricane season is winding down, the water has usually cleared of seaweed, and Christmas pricing has not kicked in yet. If you only care about the lowest fare and can live with a chance of a rainy afternoon, September and October are cheaper still. Avoid mid-February through early April if you want to skip both the highest prices and the biggest crowds.

Cancun season by season

December through February is the classic Canadian snowbird window: dry, low-humidity, low-80s°F days, and the best swimming weather of the year. It is also peak season, so fares and resort rates are at their highest, and flights out of Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary fill up early.

Late February through early April is spring break territory. The second and third weeks of March are the single busiest stretch of the year in Cancun — the airport handles well over a thousand flights some weekends — and Semana Santa (the week before Easter) brings a second wave right behind it. Expect the year’s tightest availability and some of its highest fares on top of the winter premium.

May and June are an underrated shoulder: the weather is still mostly dry and hot, hurricane season has technically started but activity is minimal this early, and demand has dropped off since spring break ended.

July and August are hot, humid, and typically the worst months for sargassum seaweed piling up on the beaches — worth knowing before you book a beachfront resort for the price, even though airfare itself isn’t always at its yearly peak here.

September and October are hurricane season’s core and the cheapest months to fly and stay, with resort rates commonly down 40–60% from winter peak. The trade-off is real: afternoon storms are common, and there is genuine hurricane risk, even though no storm has made a direct hit on Cancun since 2005. November is where the calendar turns back in your favour — storms have mostly stopped, seaweed is usually at its lowest, and pricing hasn’t caught up to Christmas yet.

Dates that move the price

Three windows drive fares from Canada: the Christmas–New Year’s stretch, March break combined with spring break (roughly the first three weeks of March into early April), and to a lesser extent Family Day/Presidents’ Day long weekends in February. Book well ahead for any of these or expect to pay a real premium for whatever seats are left.

Hurricane season (officially June 1–November 30, peaking in September and October) does not reliably move Cancun airfare down as much as it moves hotel rates down — but it is the one period where you can still find decent last-minute fares if your schedule is flexible and you are comfortable with the storm risk.

When to book
